Sleep and Childbirth: Complications from sleep apnea in pregnancy

This study will be investigating the relationship between Sleep apnea in pregnancy and pregnancy and birth complications including Gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, depression, preterm birth and birth weight

Why my research is important

Research has shown links between snoring and poor birth and pregnancy outcomes. This study will screen 200 women for sleep apnea using a device which monitors oxygen saturation and airfow. Data will be analysed to show if links exist between apnea and pregnancy/ birth outcomes,

This will be the first study to objectively analyse sleep apnea and it's relationship to depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal depression scale. Previous research shows depression and sleep apnea are related but this has not been shown objectively in pregnancy.

This research could lead to a decrease in poor pregnancy and birth outcomes leading to healthier mothers and babies.
